Psalms 9:18 "For the needy shall not always be forgotten; the expectation of the poor shall not perish forever".

HOME Our History Manna Charities started by feeding six widows until it became a Ministry. Don Smith, a retired UPS driver from Alabaster, Alabama started picking up food and using his driveway to serve the needy. Today, Manna Charities feeds 500 families each month from Chilton County, West Blocton, Birmingham, Jefferson, and Shelby counties. On Saturdays between 800 and 900 loaves of bread, along with pantry, produce, meat, dairy and sweet items are packaged and distributed to those in need on a weekly basis. Manna Charities is a 501C3 . We have volunteers that come to our warehouse, which is located 124 Market Center Drive, Alabaster Alabama. Everybody works together to serve the needy people without salary. It is all a" labour of love". In 2009, through the efforts of our volunteers and donors, Manna Charities distributed food to nearly 5000 people in need, equating to a quarter of a million pounds of food. In 1998, we were awarded the UPS – Jim Casey Community Service Award, in 1999 awarded the J.C. Penny – “Golden Rule Award,” and a three time nominee recognition by the Birmingham Urban League – Good Samaritan award. In 2004, Manna Charities was recognized and accepted by the global, nonprofit organization, Feed the Children. Manna Charities, in it's 30 years of serving the needy, is still growing. In November of 2010, Don Smith endorsed Phyllis Harbin to be the Director. He felt it was the right time to pass the baton. In July of 2012, Manna Charities moved to it's new warehouse at the back of the ResTore Building (the old Winn Dixie in Alabaster). We now have a bigger space and our folks do not have to stand outside and beat the weather. We are so thankful to the First United Methodist Church of Alabaster for adopting us and opening their doors to the poor. They are the first church in Alabaster to embrace the poor and welcome them in their sanctuary. They are indeed a blessing to so many needy folks. Thank you so much FUMCA!
